Astro Boy T-Shirts - In Memory of the Godfather of Manga

Did you know that the man, the myth, the legend who created Astro Boy is considered the Godfather of Manga? We don’t know what you’re thinking, but we think there’s certainly no greater honour than being compared to Pacino’s Don Vito Corleone.

Ok—perhaps there is one greater honour. Osama Tezuka (Astro Boy’s creator—if you hadn’t caught on) was also considered the Japanese Walt Disney. (Walt, please don’t sue us. We didn’t come up with this. And, also, have you heard of jokes?)
Tezuka achieved so much in his life. Apart from creating Astro Boy, he was also a doctor, an activist, a director, and the most influential man in manga. And so, it’s no surprise that his last words were ‘I’m begging you, let me work!’ when a nurse was trying to grab his drawing tools. That’s what we call commitment! And if that doesn’t convince you to buy this Astro Boy merch, we may as well just give up now.
But what does this have to do with Astro Boy t-shirts we hear you say? Well, ahem, they’re Astro Boy shirts. Duh.

There’s more to it, though. When you’re donning an Astro Boy t-shirt or even an Astro Boy hoodie, you’re sending a message to everyone that you believe in something beyond a cute android boy. You’re spreading the good word about manga and how it crosses cultural borders and cultivates peace. Don’t hear it from us. Hear it from Tezuka himself:

My experience convinces me that comics, regardless of what language they are printed in, are an important form of expression that crosses all national and cultural boundaries, that comics are great fun, and that they can further peace and goodwill among nations.

Which Came First Anime Shirts or Astro Boy Shirts?

Forget about the chicken-egg debate. Riddle us this. Which came first Anime shirts or Astro Boy shirts?

Believe it or not—the answer is really simple. Astro Boy made its debut in 1952. It was the first television anime produced in Japan. And it was also the first serialised anime to be dubbed into English and shown beyond Japan’s borders (in 1963). Surely you’ve got it by now.
Seriously? Zero, zip, zilch, nada? Astro Boy, of course. It’s the first-ever anime. And the reason why the term anime is even associated with Japanese cartoons. Pretty cool, eh?
It’s no wonder that it’s still the tenth best selling manga series ever.
